Advocacy and Complaints

The Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties does not provide personal assistance to individuals with human rights complaints. The following organizations may be able to assist you, if you need further information please contact us and we will refer you to an agency that can aid you. Please note the information provided is not to take the place of a lawyer. Only a lawyer can give legal advice. However, you can contact other resources to get legal information.

Manitoba Human Rights Commission

The Manitoba Human Rights Commission investigates complaints of unjust discrimination in the Province of Manitoba.

Canadian Human Rights Commission

The Canadian Human Rights Commission is responsible for investigating complaints of unjust discrimination involving the Government of Canada or federally regulated industries.

Legal Aid Manitoba

Legal Aid Manitoba provides free or low cost legal representation, in certain cases, to persons who are unable to afford a lawyer.

Manitoba Ombudsman

The office of the Ombudsman reviews complaints by persons who feel they have been unfairly dealt with by government departments or agencies.

Community Legal Education Association

CLEA provides public legal education and operates a lawyer phone-in and referral service.

University of Manitoba Legal Aid Centre 

Free legal advice provided by law students at the University of Manitoba.

Legal Help Centre

Legal Help Centre is a not-for-profit organization that was set up by community volunteers working together with faculty and students from both the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba.   To assist disadvantaged members of the community to access and exercise their legal and social rights. They provide public legal education through their website, workshops and Drop- in Clinics. Workshops are available at no cost to all. Drop-in Clinics are available to those with family incomes under $50,000 per year.
