Hourly Wages and Piecework*

Students will calculate and compare hourly wage income versus piecework income for several countries. They are invited to play the role of plant manager and will learn to solve a contextual problem that involves the application of a formula.

BP Oil Spill Crisis: There is a Good Reason to Cry Over Spilled Oil*    

Through reading an article, viewing an interview and graphing the oil spillage in the Gulf of Mexico, students will investigate the extent of the damage from the oil spill. They will reflect on possible solutions and the impacts of those solutions.

Infant Mortality Ratio Based on GDP*

Students will learn to analyze and create scatterplot graphs based on comparisons of infant mortality and GDP. They will use real life statistics and discuss the factors that increase infant mortality as well as discuss possible actions to change these stats. This lesson is structured to be easily used in Grades 9-11.
