The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Students will become familiar with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and connect personally to the impact of human rights violations through the use of personal experiences and art. This lesson can be used as the first in a series of three or alone.

Bullying, Conflict and Genocide
Students will examine the Bully Cycle through the use of the novel Daniel’s Story by Carol Matas (available through MARL) which illustrates the various roles of people during the holocaust. They will use a community Impact Chart to gain an understanding of discriminatory practices and personal behaviours. This lesson can be used as the second in a series of three or alone.

Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship
Students will examine the process of de-humanization which occurs to both victim and perpetrator in the context of genocide and human rights violations with the use of the video “A Good Man in Hell: General Romeo Dallaire and the Rwandan Genocide,” (13 min, available from MARL). They will study Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and understand that it is not possible to harm another person without also harming yourself. This lesson can be used as the final lesson in a series of three or alone.
